This piece is a departure from Ben Billy's vessel work. The buffalo is rendered as a flat upright slab, 4 inches tall and 6 inches wide, with just over an inch of depth. That slim profile gives both sides a clean, open canvas, and Ben Billy uses them differently. Mountain and staircase motifs on one side, a different geometric arrangement on the reverse. Two distinct displays in one sculpture.
The color moves from midnight black and cobalt blue at the head into bright cerulean blue across the body, with a band of sunset terracotta at the base. The surface is polished to a professional sheen, making the carved lines sharp and the pigments rich. Signed "BL Navajo" on the bottom.
