Molly Goldtooth captures the high desert in three layers here. A blue sand sky with a whisper of white cloud at the top, a sandstone mesa in the center shaded from dark charcoal at the base to warm orange at the crown, the way desert rock actually glows at golden hour, and a tan desert floor in the foreground with a yucca plant and a dark shadow band that gives the whole scene depth and ground.

It reads like a small landscape painting, except the texture is real. The grit of the natural sands catches light differently depending on the angle, and the gradient shading on the mesa is done entirely by hand. At 3 by 2 inches it's a lot of Southwest in a small space.
