This is the most ambitious piece in the olive wood collection. Salim, a Jordanian woodcarver who signed and dated this piece "Salim 84," shaped the entire sculpture into a large symmetrical eight-pointed star, 11 inches across. Each of the eight rays is carved with a five-petal floral motif at the center and finished with a scalloped edge. The grain of the olive wood follows the natural contours of the star, honey tones and deep brown veins running through every point.
At the center sits a hexagonal recessed grotto with a full nativity scene inside. Mary and Joseph, a kneeling figure, and a standing shepherd are gathered around the infant Jesus in a manger. Two resting sheep and a donkey complete the scene. The Star of Bethlehem is carved into the back wall of the grotto directly above the manger. A built-in wooden support on the back allows it to stand on a flat surface or be wall mounted.
