This 6-inch Mudhead Kachina is handcrafted by Jacida and DeWayne Loley, artists from Shiprock, New Mexico. The Mudhead, or Koyemsi, is one of the most recognizable and beloved figures in Pueblo ceremony, known for his round clay-colored head, bulging eyes, and playful, unpredictable nature. Each doll is shaped and painted by hand, with carefully applied details that capture the Mudhead's iconic and endearing appearance.
In Pueblo tradition, Mudheads serve as clowns and entertainers during ceremonies, bringing laughter and lightness to the gathering while also acting as messengers between the spirit world and the people. Despite their comedic role, they are deeply sacred figures, respected for the balance they bring to ceremonial life. Because each piece is made by hand, colors and details will vary slightly, making yours one of a kind.
