This 6-inch Black Ogre Kachina is handcrafted by Jacida and DeWayne Loley, artists from Shiprock, New Mexico. The Black Ogre, known as Nata-aska in Hopi tradition, is one of the most dramatic and recognizable figures in Pueblo ceremony, distinguished by his fearsome black face, bulging eyes, and long snapping beak. Each doll is shaped and painted by hand, with feather and textile accents that bring this striking figure to life in vivid detail.

Despite his fearsome appearance, the Black Ogre serves an important and protective role in Pueblo ceremonial life. He accompanies the Soyoko, or ogre women, during winter ceremonies to encourage children to behave and fulfill their responsibilities to the community. He is a figure of discipline and order, reminding the people of the importance of living in balance and harmony. Because each piece is made by hand, colors and details will vary slightly, making yours one of a kind.
