This 3-inch Mudhead Kachina is handcrafted by Jacida and DeWayne Loley, artists from Shiprock, New Mexico. The Mudhead, or Koyemsi, is one of the most recognizable and beloved figures in Hopi and Pueblo ceremony, known for its round clay-colored head, simple features, and playful, unpredictable nature. Each doll is shaped and painted by hand, capturing the warm earthy tones and distinctive rounded form that make the Mudhead instantly recognizable. Feather and textile accents complete the piece.

Despite their comic appearance, Mudheads hold an important ceremonial role, serving as drummers, dancers, and clowns who entertain the crowd and interact with children during ceremonies. They are figures of joy and community, as much a part of the spiritual gathering as any other Kachina. Because each piece is made by hand, colors and details will vary slightly, making yours one of a kind.
