This 3-inch Clown Kachina is handcrafted by Jacida and DeWayne Loley, artists from Shiprock, New Mexico. Known as the Koshari or Hano Clown, the Clown Kachina holds a unique and important role in Pueblo ceremony, acting as a comic figure who entertains the crowd while also teaching lessons about proper behavior and humility. Each doll is shaped and painted by hand, typically featuring bold black and white striped markings and an expressive, animated face.
Despite the playful appearance, the Clown Kachina carries real cultural weight. These figures serve as a reminder not to take life too seriously, while also reinforcing community values through humor and satire. Because each piece is made by hand, colors and details will vary slightly, making yours one of a kind.
